"Tales My Papa Told Me" takes young audiences on the journey through childhood when
parents expose us to all kinds of magical experiences - and the mind takes wing. The
tales that Ionesco made up to delight his daughter Marie-France (herein called Josette) bring to
life a world where everyone is named Jacqueline and words have opposite meanings: a chair is window,
a window is a pen, a pillow is bread, and more. In another tale, an airplane ride takes us
over the roofs, the parks, the zoos of Paris -- to the farmlands and rivers of France --- and journeys
on to the moon and planets, from which Josette and her Papa have to walk back because the plane has
melted on the hot sun. The tales are for children of all ages. In this adaptation,
the storybook characters are brought to life: Josette's Mama, her Papa, the cleaning woman Jacqueline,
and all the others that spring from her Father's stories. Three tales are played out and
interspersed with children's songs - some taught bilingually, such as Frere Jacques (Brother John) and
Au clair de la lune. The songs are well known in English and, therefore, it will be easy to
intersperse French words. We have discovered in our "Latino Tales, Riddles & Songs"
that this is a good way to teach very simple foreign words to young people - the amount of language taught
is adjusted for each age level. There are four singer-actors in the production and the company
comes self-contained with props, music, costumes, and all other equipment.
